Género de cactáceas globosas a cilíndricas del desierto de Chihuahua y Coahuila en México y sur de Texas en EE.UU. Tubérculos prominentes en costillas. Flores grandes llamativas en todos los colores. Muchas especies con espinas centrales largas robustas. Subfamilia Cactoideae.

Distribución: México (Coahuila, Chihuahua, Durango, Nuevo León, San Luis Potosí, Tamaulipas, Zacatecas) y EE.UU. (Texas). Desierto chihuahuense, matorrales calcáreos y suelos pedregosos entre 500–1800 m s.n.m.

Conservación: CITES Apéndice II para todas las especies. Amenazadas por colecta ilegal, desarrollo urbano (especialmente en Monterrey y Saltillo) y cambio climático. Varias especies con distribución muy restringida.
